IC: Carlo is an Italian soldier from World War II, first in the Alpini (mountain troops) and then in the Artillery. He also happens to be a deeply closeted homosexual, with serious conflicted feelings about his sexuality. He fell in love with a comrade, Francesco, during the war in Albania, only to have him die in Carlo’s arms while fighting the Greeks. Antonio only confessed his feelings when the other was dying. He is an abnormally large and powerful man, capable of great feats of strength. He has just recently been transferred to the artillery battery on the occupied island of Cephalonia, under the command of Captain Antonio Corelli, who Carlo has now also fallen in love with. This new love has given him motivation and brought him back from the brink of suicide. His love is unrequited, however. Antonio is in love with a Greek girl, Pelagia.
Carlo is intensely loyal, friendly, and brave. He has, as Antonio Corelli says, “many medals for saving lives and none for taking them.”
